CTRF WEBINAR
The Merger of CP and Kansas City Southern Railways
November 16, 2022
Overview of the application for approval to the US Surface Transportation Board, and responses from the other Class 1 freight railways
This webinar provides an overview of the proposed merger of Canadian Pacific (CP) and Kansas City Southern (KCS) railways. The merger requires approval from the US Surface Transportation Board (STB) and, if approved, would create the first railway in North America to serve Canada, the US and Mexico. Issues addressed include anticipated impacts on employment, safety, capital expenditures, passenger train services, trucking and the environment. The extent of traffic diversion from trucking and other railways is also covered, together with the potential for new rail markets.
In response to the application for approval, the five other Class 1 freight railways have each requested that conditions be applied before giving approval, and the presentation also summarizes those conditions. The STB has just concluded a series of public hearings on all these matters and a final decision is expected late in 2022 or early 2023.
